1974 Mustang II Mach I
This is the homepage for my 74 Mustang 'Johnny Kiss Me'.
Johnny was my first car, and was with me from my first year of college, until shortly before I was married. I sold it in 1993. In 2005, I hunted it down and brought him home to my corral where so many Mustangs have been in the years since I reluctantly let him go. Now I will make right that mistake, by restoring him back to the sharp looking little car he was when I brought him home in 1987.
To begin with:
Finding Johnny - Here is how Johnny found his way back home (November, 05)
Damage - What needs fixin' (November, 05)
Teardown Page 1 - removing the seats
and carpet ( January 3, 06)
Teardown Page 2 - removing the rear interior
quarter panels and door panels ( January 7, 06)
(June 11, 06) With the car disassembled I stopped work through the winter, mostly because there's no heater in the garage right now. This gave me lots of time to think about the future of my project. I've decided to pull the V6, which isn't a great engine by any means, and install a 4cyl turbo motor like the SVO had. This one is from a Thunderbird TurboCoupe. I have bought the motor, but I can't pick it up until September, so progress will be pretty slow this summer.
The 2.3L Turbo 4 engine - getting the new engine home (updated October 22)
January 17, 2007
Not a lot of updates recently. If I logged them all they would say "I went out in the garage today. It was cold. I came back inside and played video games" ha-ha! I really need to get a heater out there again!
But I have been accumulating parts:
A pedal assembly with a clutch pedal for our conversion to the 5 sp
Mustang II engine mounts for the 2.3L 4cyl engine
Front sump Mustang II Oil Pan for the 2.3L (this is different from the TC rear
sump oil pan currently on the engine)
And I know this one is a long way off - but I bought this hood scoop that had
been cut out of an SVO hood

It's huge, it's kind of bent up, but it's all there, and if I could get that grafted into a II hood so the scoop could feed the intercooler, it would be the coolest thing ever. I think I'll keep my original hood as is though - just in case. I'll need a spare hood to put the scoop on, and that won't happen until the engine is in so I'll know exactly where the intercooler ends up.
I've also been emailing with Clay, who has the finished product, which his son Darrell built: http://svoii.mustangii.net
And lastly I've been mentally prepping for body and paint by watching the Paintucation DVDs. They are really good, I feel much more confident that I can do much of the prep work although I will almost certainly leave the actual painting to someone else. Their website seems to be down right now, but last time I visited it they had a pretty nice forum set up as well. Hopefully that is still active.
